Introduction
We are Save the Children. We work in more than 120 countries. We save children’s lives. We fight for their rights. We help them fulfil their potential

Save the Children began working in Niger in July 2005 in response to the nutrition emergency. Save the Children established feeding programmes for malnourished children in Maradi province (Tessaoua and Aiguie districts) and Zinder province (Kantché (ex-Matameye) and Magaria districts) using the community therapeutic care (CTC) model. This programme has continued since then, with an average of 30,000 to 40,000 new admissions per year, and it has progressively shifted from a large-scale emergency response towards an integrated service of the primary health care system.

In 2007, Save the Children began to support the primary health care system in two districts of Maradi in order to complement our nutrition work and address some of the root causes of malnutrition. This project, funded by a private UK foundation, is a broad programme addressing access to and quality of primary health services, targeting children under 5 and women of childbearing age. It focused on facilities rehabilitation, essential drugs and equipment supply, support to EPI, capacity building and training of medical staff and support to district and regional level planning and coordination bodies.

Save the Children is continuing to expand its operations in Maradi, Zinder, and Diffa.  Niger has ratified most of the key international and regional legislation for the protection of children.  In addition in 1999 Niger adopted its own National Policy for Child Protection. Despite the efforts made by government to ensure the legislative frameworks necessary are in place, the protection issues facing children, such as child labour, abuse, violence and separation, continue to be endemic.  Government structures are under-resourced and thus not able to present tenable solutions.
